Freeform Onomatopoeia Writing

I wanted my class of year 2 and 3 learners to identify and use onomatopoeia in their narrative writing.

To get us started I used the app Freeform to plan and generate some ideas.

We first went and saved a image we found online of a noisy setting - such as Times Square New York City. We then imported the image onto freeform. We talked about some onomatopoeia words that we might here such as zoom, crash, bang, ahhhh etc and put these into a shape with the automatic text function around the image.

They then used the voice recording in keynote to make the sounds, or you could use the video function on freeform to make a selfie of you saying the word.

Finally we took these ideas and wrote a story using the scene making sure that we included the onomatopoeia words. This was a highly engaging writing task that even my most reluctant writers engaged in the writing process. For some of them they used the voice to text function to record their story.

Love to hear that you added the voice recordings - I can imagine the learners enjoying this.

Thanks for sharing a successful writing lesson enhanced with the IT!

Really fun and engaging activity brought together on Freeform! I like the idea of thinking about the sounds one might “hear” in the photo. So many possibilities with this technique.
