Reimagining Lowry in the Digital Age: A Keynote Art Lesson for KS2

This creative digital art lesson, Reimagining J.L. Lowry – “Man on a Wall” in 2025, is designed for KS2 students and blends art, computing, and personal identity. Inspired by L.S. Lowry’s 1957 painting Man Lying on a Wall, the lesson invites students to explore symbolism and self-representation while developing technical skills in Keynote.

Using iPads, children recreate Lowry’s iconic scene with a modern twist—posing with props that represent their identity and digitally layering images in Keynote to compose their own “2025” version of the artwork. This task introduces layering as a key design skill, allowing students to arrange backgrounds, midgrounds, and foregrounds while using features like Instant Alpha to remove backgrounds and position themselves “on the wall.”

Ideal for art, computing, and cross-curricular lessons, this activity supports visual literacy, digital composition, and creative self-expression. It’s accessible to educators looking to explore symbolism, introduce Keynote for digital art, or celebrate how traditional themes can be reimagined through modern technology.

Thanks for this lesson and Keynote instructions! Students will have fun with this and also learn a lot about how to use Keynote to create art and self-representation.
