My year 4, 5 and 6 students were inspired by the silent movie Going for a Spin from the Everyone Can Create Video guide. After watching the movie, we explored what made it so effective, sparking great discussions about storytelling without words. The learners were highly motivated to create their own!
We co-constructed our success criteria for making silent movies and generated a range of ideas —everything from sports moments to disagreements and dreams. The focus of the lesson was on collaboration, with clear indicators for co-constructing goals, taking responsibility, negotiating, and sharing ideas.
To support their planning, I created a Keynote template that helped students easily structure their storylines, ensuring their silent movies were simple yet effective. This template guided their thinking, making it easier to craft clear and engaging storylines while maintaining a focus on visual storytelling. With this support, students worked together to produce powerful silent movies in iMovie that showcased their creativity and teamwork.
I’d love to hear if others have tried creating silent movies with their learners and how it went!

Love the idea of silent movie making. It certainly gets the students to dip into the history of movie making as well as to come up with their own creative ideas for topics. Thanks for the easy to use template to help learners with a framework for their films!
